Dr. Burke, Why Do Some People Become Nearsighted?
Nearsightedness is present in only about 2% of children when entering school. Its prevalence increases markedly during the school years. Once a child becomes near sighted, the condition tends to progress rapidly for a period of several years unlike farsightedness or astigmatism. Once nearsightedness is found it tends to progress, suggesting that nearsightedness may be due environmental influences.
